WHAT'S NEW
WE ARE
7 YEARS OLD!

Excel celebrates its 7th year on New Year's Day 2008. It's been seven great years and we are growing stronger and better.

Looking back, 2007 was another banner year for Excel TKD. In January, we moved to a bigger and better location. Excel TKD's new home boasts of more than 6,000 square feet of space, making our school one of the biggest schools in the San Fernando Valley.

In July, Team Excel did a great job at the Junior Nationals. With only 7 athletes, we came home with 7 Gold medals and 2 Bronze medals.

In November, Mr. and Mrs. Marcelino tested for their 5th Dan. The test was conducted by Grand Master Sung Chon Hong, Vice President of the Philippine Taekwondo Association and WTF Executive Council Member. Coaches of the Philippine Team, National Team members, and senior black belts of the PTA took their black belt tests as well.

Thank you for your continued trust and patronage.
May the year 2008 bring all of us health and happiness.

EXCEL WINS 3 SILVER MEDALS AT THE 2008 JUNIOR OLYMPICS IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN

Excel Taekwondo Center captured 3 silver medals at the recently concluded USA Taekwondo Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships.

Marina Sobrevinas, 14, fought in the Black Belt 14 to 17 Year Old World Class Division where she lost in the finals. A gold medal win would have earned Marina the female finweight spot in the US Junior National Team. This is her first time to compete in the Junior Olympics as a black belt. She was a gold medalist in the red belt division in last year's Junior Olympics.

Tyler Miyagishima, 10, fought a very tough finals match against a competitor from Texas. The final score was 3-2 in favor of Texas. Tyler competed in the Black Belt 10 to 11 Year Old World Class Division. He won the gold medal last year in this division. In 2006, he won the gold medal as a red belt.

The final silver medal winner from Team Excel is Sachi De La Cruz, 8, who competed in the Red Belt 8 to 9 Year Old World Class Division. Sachi lost in the sudden death round.

The other competitors from Excel were Christian Garcia (Black Belt 14 to 17 Year Old World Class Division), Zachary Avila (Black Belt 12 to 13 Year Old World Class Division), and Bishop De La Cruz (Blue Belt 6 to 7 Year Old Elite Open Division). This is the first time of Christian and Zachary to compete as black belts in the Junior Olympics.

Quality Taekwondo and martial arts instruction in the West San Fernando Valley - Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, West Hills, Tarzana, and Calabasas.

Incredible Children's Program
Taekwondo training is important for every young person, from any background or family situation. Through its philosophical concepts, Taekwondo provides a fantastic way to instill a positive attitude, physical and mental courage, and ethical strength in children.
For example, kids are required to remember and understand the "Seven Home Rules for Children":
1. Children will greet their parents with a "Hi, Mom!" or "Hi Dad!" when they enter the house and tell their parents goodbye when they leave.
2. Children will always be respectful of their parents, teachers and elders.
3. Children will be kind to their brothers and sisters.
4. Children will keep their households neat and clean.
5. Children will keep their hair, body and teeth clean every day.
6. Children will not interrupt adult conversations.
7. Children shall study to get straight "A's" daily.

But simply memorizing a list of rules is not enough. Excel TKD instructors recognize that praise and encouragement are the most important elements in the Children's Program. That's because they build respect - self-respect as well as respect for others.

Excel TKD instructors continuously emphasize the importance of respect through their words and actions. Students are addressed as "Sir" or "Ma'am," and they quickly learn to repeat these courtesies in the every day world. Instructors also strive to keep classes enjoyable and exciting - teaching children that learning can be fun and that striving for a goal need not be dull and boring.

Excel TKD teaches children to realize that challenges and goals in life are met most successfully with hard work, focused effort, and perseverance.

Awesome Adult Program
Have you ever passed a martial arts studio, paused to look in window, and then kept going thinking, "if only I were ten years younger." Don't give up on yourself. Everyone regardless of age can benefit from Taekwondo training.

In a world where time for workout is hard to come by, Taekwondo provides the perfect answer. With just two to three 45 minutes sessions a week, Taekwondo gives you a fantastic way to get in shape, sharpen your mind, quicken your reflexes and prepare you for the challenges of daily life. Adult students report a significant improvement in their quality of life outside the studio as a result of the physical and philosophical lessons learned at Excel Taekwondo Center.

Taekwondo works virtually every muscle group in the body and is an excellent way to increase your cardio vascular fitness. Taekwondo workouts are exciting, unique and challenging. As you lose weight, gain muscle tone and improve your stamina, you'll find yourself doing things you never thought possible - and loving it! Adults often marvel at their increased flexibility, eye-hand coordination, endurance, and strength. And, most importantly students build true confidence from learning self-defense techniques…even if they're never called upon to use them.

While some requirements are fixed, most standards for Taekwondo advancements are based upon the maximum potential for each individual. Whether you're seven or seventy, you'll be surprised at what awesome things Taekwondo can do for you!

Team Excel
Team Excel is the elite group of students of Excel Taekwondo Center. Members are selected based on their skill, dedication, perseverance, and fighting spirit. The primary objective of Team Excel is to mold and train students into champions at state and national level Taekwondo tournaments. With its inclusion as an official sport in the Olympics, Taekwondo is the fastest rising martial art and sport in the United States.

In 2005, Team Excel won six medals in the World Class Division at the Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships and twenty medals at the California State Taekwondo Championships.

In 2006, one of our own made it into the US Junior National Team by winning the gold medal in the 2006 Junior Olympic Taekwondo Championships. He represented the US in the 6th World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Team Excel members undergo intensive training in Poomse (forms) and Kyoroogi (sparring). Training sessions will focus on developing focus, confidence, timing, speed, power, and flexibility.
